Welcome to “The Victor!”
Vic is a 2022 NuCamp TAG XL Boondock, purchased off the lot in Madison, WI on September 7th, 2022. To help navigate your way through the cool and sometimes quirky features, I’ve created this cheat sheet of sorts. It is an evolving document so your feedback is important so I can create a great experience for all. I am not a serial renter. I use Vic myself and thoroughly enjoy it. I rent it a few times a year so it can be enjoyed. It is my home as well so I hope you will treat it like your own.
PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE DOCUMENT
You can find the owners manual on the nucamprv dot com website for any questions you may have specific to this tag. It is a 2022 Tag XL Boondock.
The t@g is not built like grandpa’s Cadillac. Expect anything in it to rattle around and bounce everywhere. Since it is fairly new, you may find little silver metal shavings on the bed from drilling when built. They come from the roof trim. Please clean them up or you will potentially have a very uncomfortable night.
Do:
Walk around and check for anything loose, unlocked, hanging, etc. before towing.
Explore
Be Present
Respect Vic
Use the notebook in the right cabinet at the foot of the bed if you’d like to tell us about your journey for others to see.
Have a blast!
Do NOT:
Skip safety steps towing.
Drive with windows open or unlocked
Drive without the doors locked/deadbolted. They will jiggle open… It happened to me.
Put the awning away improperly. Detailed instructions are in the tongue box.
Leave propane on when not using the cooktop.
Drive without the galley properly closed and locked.
Drive with loose items in the galley.
Use the ceiling fan without opening it.
Drive with the windows or fan enclosure open.
Step on the fenders. They will NOT support your weight or more than a couple pounds. I learned the hard way on day 1.
What’s on board?
King bed. (Technically it is in between a king and queen. The mattress is 5” narrower and 2” shorter than a standard king.) It is a typical camper mattress but I’ve added a 3” memory foam topper to make it more comfortable. The unit will have a fresh set of sheets, pillows, blanket and comforter upon rental. The bottom sheet will be on and the top sheet, blanket and comforter will be folded on the bed for your choice.
Cabinets. There is storage at the foot of the bed and at the head.
Lighting. There are small LED reading lights, overhead light, side “porch” lights all switched on from inside the sleeping area. Additionally, the galley kitchen has both accent lighting and an overhead light. In the storage at the head of the bed are two solar led lights. One is a mini blow up lantern to hang where you’d like and the other twists to open and is rope lighting perfect for stringing around the awning. There is a small flashlight in the tray at the head of the bed if you need it.
Windows/Shades. The tag has PLENTY of windows! The door window shades spin to provide privacy. The big rectangle skylight, side windows and fan all open. The side windows and skylights have darkening shades and screens. You can choose by gently raising the middle clip and slide up and down. The windows have locks and please make sure they are locked in shut when traveling. Wind could tear them off.
Fan. There is a two direction, variable speed ceiling fan inside. DO NOT run without spinning the fan enclosure open. DO NOT travel with the enclosure open or the fan on.
Outlets. There are several outlets, standard and USB in the tag. They will only provide power if connected to shore power or a generator.
Heat/AC. The tag has both. The heat is controlled by remote control in the tray on the headboard. The air conditioner is manual. You must be connected to shore power or a generator for either to work.
Galley Kitchen. Under the sink, I’ve stocked the kitchen with many of the basics. There is limited room on the tag so do your best to clean and put the puzzle back together. There is cookware, a hot water pot, utensils, dish drying pad, cooking spray, salt/pepper, dishes, cleaning supplies, spare garbage bags, spare ziplock bags, zip ties (in case you see any wires or anything hanging.) There is a microwave (only works with shore power or generator) and a propane two-burner cooktop. Make sure you turn the propane on in the front storage area on the tongue. Please only turn it on while in use. There is a lighter in the utensil cylinder under the sink.
Sink. The tag has an 8 gallon fresh water potable tank that will be full when you rent it. It is fine for cleaning, cooking, coffee, drinking, etc. I typically don’t drink it to save for cleaning and to be sure I know what I’m drinking. I have a large drinking water jug that can be strapped to the front of the tag you are welcome to use. To operate the sink, you have to switch on the water pump button above the sink. Then turn it off when not using it. It pulls from the tank unless you are connected to “city water” located on the driver’s side. In the water compartment is a city water connection and a hole to fill the 8 gallon tank. There is a fresh water hose in the tongue box to refill the tank. The sink drains directly below so be careful what you set underneath. The drain cover cap hangs under the tag and you can screw it on to shut it while traveling.
Cooler. There is an Otter soft cooler in the galley. It is portable/backpack style if need be.
Shore power. There is a cord in the tongue box with a standard outlet adapter for connecting to shore power or generator.
Hitch lock. There is a yellow hitch lock in the tongue box. If you unhitch from the tag and leave the campsite, please put the hitch lock in the tongue to prevent theft.
Wheel Chocks. There are two in the tongue box. Please use to prevent Vic from rolling away when unhitching.
Battery/power switch. There is a switch in the tongue box to turn on the power from the battery. The battery charges three ways. 1) Attached to shore power, 2) Solar, 3) from the car while driving (the switch needs to be on for this. I suggest traveling with it on but make sure all power draining items are off)
Spare tire. It is mounted underneath the t@g
Hitch. The tag needs a 2” ball. It has 2 safety chains, a 7 pin round connector, and one thin breakaway clip. This activates trailer brakes if for some reason the tag unhitches from your vehicle.
Support Struts. There are two support struts at the rear of the camper on each side. The black handle to screw down and up is in the tongue box. Once you find your level camping spot and unhitch, lower each of these to provide stability BEFORE you climb in and tip over!
Awning. I added what I feel is the best awning on the market. It is the Overland 270 and all the instructions and everything you need to know is in the instructions in the plastic bin in the tongue box. If you use the awning, which takes minutes to set up, please read the instructions and make sure it is stowed properly to avoid a fee. The straps needed and paper instructions are in the box inside the tongue box. You only need the straps on top and instructions if not viewing online. Improper stowing will result in damage and they are not cheap. Some poles are attached when you spin it open and are adjustable to provide the height needed. There are also three additional poles that are not attached but inside the cover. Unzip it slowly and grab those so they do not fall. They are in a tan bag together. DO NOT set up on windy days without help. While setting up, and before poles are stood, it is carrying a lot of weight and could break if not careful.
Miscellaneous. There is additional storage under each side of the bed by picking up the mattress. On the driver's side are a couple of skewers for roasting marshmallows, hot dogs, etc.
